A 19-year-old man is in jail Monday, and being called a “person of interest” by Battle Creek police in connection with the shooting death of Demarr Johnson.
Stefano Davis was arraigned in court on several charges, including felony firearms, possession of a stolen weapon and carrying a concealed weapon.
Johnson, 30, was shot several times around 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 700 block of Michigan Avenue West. Police went to the scene after receiving a report of a fight with shots fired in the area.
Neighbors say the shooting happened in the parking lot at the A to Z Key Shop, a local locksmith. Johnson was pronounced dead on arrival at a Battle Creek hospital.
A crowd of around 50 to 60 people was there when police arrived, but scattered quickly. The witnesses who stayed behind were not being cooperative, police officials said.
However, Chief David Headings told 24 Hour News 8 on Monday investigators are enjoying a good level of cooperation from the citizens.
Davis was found after a tip to Silent Observer. He and Johnson knew each other, officers say, but they are unsure of what led to the shooting.
Davis is being held on $1.5 million bond in the Calhoun County jail.
